A Câmara Municipal de Campina Grande concedeu a ele a medalha e o diploma ao Mérito Municipal, maior honraria ofertada pela Casa de Félix Araújo, por meio de propositura do vereador Pimentel Filho. Cumpade João – como o homenageado é popularmente conhecido -, é o responsável pela Casa de Cumpade, restaurante especializado em gastronomia regional, que funciona na Fazenda Olho D’Água, no distrito de Galante. Por lá, durante todo o mês de junho, ele também é o anfitrião do tradicional Arraiá de Cumpade, evento referenciado como um dos maiores festivais juninos do país. Pimentel Filho conhece de perto os trabalhos desenvolvidos pelo chef e sabe bem a importância deles para a região. “A ideia da homenagem partiu justamente dos seus esforços em enaltecer nosso turismo rural e a gastronomia da terra”, explicou.
