Filho de pais escravos, tornou-se fotógrafo quando este tipo de registro ainda era recente - e raro - no sertão tão distante dos grandes centros urbanos do país. Mesmo sem referências de outros artistas, José Ezelino registrou a si mesmo e seus familiares com a mesma linha estética das famílias de alta classe da região Sudeste e de países europeus. Figurino, direção, cenários e captação eram criações do próprio artista. Além da história do fotógrafo, o livro reúne diversos registros feitos pelo artista ao longo de sua carreira. O trabalho é considerado único, já que a maioria dos registros dos negros da época mostram imagens e vendedores de rua e trabalhadores braçais.
